I'm posting this journal to bring everyones attention to Day of Silence (DOS). The Day of Silence a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies. This years Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King.
I'm am proud to say that this year we have around 12 that are helping out with this at my school, I know 12 is a small number but in a school of under 480 students in the middle of the 'Bible belt' and in a small town this is a big deal. We are trying to bring attention to the name calling and bullying that goes on within our school and I am just trying to be able to go to prom with my girlfriend next year. I don't have my hopes up for any of this our principle is a homophobe but I'll do my best to fight it.
"Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence (DOS), a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment. This years DOS is held in memory of Lawrence King, a 15 year-old student who was killed in school because of his sexual orientation and gender expression. I believe that ending the silence is the fi rst step toward building awareness and making a commitment to address these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today."
